Music
Hungarian composer, musicologist and educator, Zoltan Kodaly, believed that "music, an essential language for knowing oneself and the world, should be the birthright of every human being." (Selected Writings, 1974)
With this belief at the forefront of our minds, the Music Department at Sherborne Qatar offers a safe and exciting environment for all children to learn and experience Music. Based on the developmental style of teaching known as The Kodaly Method, children are taught to understand Music and Music Theory through singing and the playing of music.
All Sherborne Qatar classes currently have two Classroom Music lessons weekly. During their Music lessons the students are taught musicianship as well as music literacy. They are encouraged to perform as beautifully as they are able in all situations thus enhancing their appreciation of "good music". It is understood that children learn best when they experience good music of a high standard. This includes the music that they themselves perform, whether in class, or on the concert stage. Regular concerts are given by students so they are able to enhance the skills they have learned. All Sherborne Qatar Music students are given the opportunity to perform either in front of the class or on the concert platform. Through this experience, students learn to take risks in a safe environment.
With the aid of ICT, Qatar Sherborne Music students are able to investigate the world of music. The use of interactive whiteboard technology allows the children to learn within an exciting work place. The use of Websites allows students to see and hear concerts from all over the world, encompassing many genres of music from many cultures. While it is not believed that all Sherborne Qatar students will graduate to become performing musicians, the aim is that all who have learned music at the School will have an understanding of and appreciation for good music, that they will learn to be understanding of their fellow human beings and that they will learn to be risk takers who positively affect all those around them.
