SHERBORNE Qatar is delighted to announce the launch of the Sherborne Qatar Girls’ School which will open, in a new building at Al Ebb, in 2020. We believe that Sherborne Qatar is already the school of choice for many families in Qatar and now we are offering even more choice. The school will have the same ethos, values and curriculum as the other Sherborne Qatar schools and, except for some members of the Arabic Department, the all female staff will be British trained and qualified.

Sherborne School is one of the UK’s most prestigious independent schools which has been providing outstanding education since 1550. Its sister school, Sherborne Qatar, is now entering its tenth year in Doha and has established an enviable reputation with both the Qatari and expat communities for quality, all round British education and “Outstanding pastoral care” (BSO report 2017). The 2017 British Schools Overseas (BSO) Inspection noted that the school has, “A skilled, passionate and genuinely supportive teaching staff” and, “The pupils are courteous and enthusiastic learners that look forward to lessons and are proud to be members of the school community.” The existing Sherborne Qatar schools also enjoy an excellent relationship with Qatar’s Ministry of Education and Higher Education and the 2018 QNSA report noted, “Strength in the quality of the educational leadership, teaching and learning, development and care for learners.”

Girls at Sherborne Qatar Senior School have always participated with considerable success in the Model United Nations, sports teams, plays, concerts, the Qatar British Festival and in debating, with two of the girls being selected for the Qatar National Team for the World Schools’ Debating Championships. They have also contributed significantly to the Enrichment and Inter House programmes. They will continue to have these opportunities at the girls’ school and the educational evidence from UK girls’ only schools is that many girls find it easier to flourish and take on new challenges in an all-girls environment. There will also be the opportunity for staff and pupil collaboration with girls at Sherborne Qatar Senior School and for Girls’ School pupils to participate in exchange programmes with Sherborne Girls’ School in Dorset.

Sherborne School has a strong educational belief that, for many pupils, single sex education between the ages of 14 and 17 is advantageous, with a return to co-educational education for A Levels. This is in the best traditions of British education and is the educational philosophy behind the girls’ school. Initially the school will open for girls in Years 7 to 9 and then Years 10 and 11 will open in 2021 and 2022 for the girls to study IGCSE courses. They will then move to study for A Levels at the existing Senior School, where the exclusive Michael French Sixth Form Centre is to be built. Currently, pupils at Sherborne Qatar can choose from 21 AS and A Levels and these include subjects such as Business Studies, Government and Politics and Media Studies, as well as the more traditional subjects such as English, Maths and Science. There are also plans to extend this range. Pupils can also study for a BTech Level 2 in Business Studies. Many recent pupils have successfully moved on to a range of top universities around the world. A new and additional Sherborne Qatar Prep School for Reception to Year 6 will open on the same site at Al Ebb.
