British Schools Overseas Inspection 2026

The British Schools Overseas (BSO) inspection is a voluntary scheme run by the UK Department for Education. It measures British schools outside the United Kingdom against the same standards used to inspect independent schools at home, so parents can compare a school in Doha with a school in Britain on equal terms. The purpose is straightforward: to give parents an honest, independent view of the school, the quality of education it provides, and how it stands against schools in the UK.

In February 2026, the BSO inspection team completed a full inspection of Sherborne School, Mall of Qatar. Their verdict: Outstanding in three of the eight standards. The quality of education was judged Good. The judgement is endorsed by the British government and is valid for three years.

The school provides a high-quality, holistic education for its pupils. Pupils are extremely well-cared for and safe. They enjoy a range of opportunities through which they develop leadership skills and compassion for others. School leaders are forward thinking, with a clear vision for the future development of the school.

FOR FAMILIES MOVING TO QATAR

We’ve Answered the Questions You Haven’t Asked Yet

An authentically British school. Inspectors confirm the National Curriculum for England across all key stages, IGCSEs and A levels, UK age groupings, UK-style school day, British-style uniform and staff who are predominantly UK-qualified.

A community that already feels like home. Around one third of pupils are British and the wider community represents over fifty nationalities. Your child will join a community where arriving from somewhere new is the shared story, not the exception.

Settled, safe and supported from day one. Welfare, health and safety judged Outstanding. Three full-time nurses, more than forty first-aid trained staff, four staffed entry gates and weekly safeguarding meetings led by senior leaders, the school nurse and counsellor.

Year 7 transition that calms the nerves. New Year 7 pupils stay in a familiar home room on the prep floor for the first half term. Senior school teachers come to them. Confidence first, then independence.

A direct line to school leaders. Inspectors highlighted an open-door approach and prompt responses to concerns. EduLink is used across the prep and senior phases, with Class Dojo additionally embedded in the prep school. Information is also accessible to Arabic-speaking parents.

The British Schools Overseas inspection framework uses the same standards applied to independent schools in the United Kingdom. “Outstanding” is the highest judgement available. Sherborne School, Mall of Qatar was awarded this rating in three standards: pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development; pupils’ welfare, health and safety; and leadership and management.
Penta International is one of the inspection providers approved by the UK Department for Education to inspect British schools overseas. A team of five inspectors spent three days inside the school. They observed 52 lessons, reviewed every policy and held discussions with pupils, parents and staff. The process is quality assured by the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted), and the judgement is endorsed by the British government.
The BSO benchmarks the school against the same standards as independent schools in the UK. Inspectors confirmed that pupils perform above UK averages in KS4 and KS5 external examinations. Teaching, pastoral care, leadership and safeguarding are all measured against UK frameworks, and pupils are prepared for IGCSEs and A levels in line with national expectations.
The 2026 inspection covers our Mall of Qatar campus only. Our other schools (School for Girls Al Ebb, School for Boys Al Rayyan and Prep Bani Hajer) and our specialist SEN provision (Qetaf, in Bani Hajer) share the same ethos, leadership and quality standards across the wider Sherborne Qatar family.
